PSYchology

Lev Bakst is one of the brightest legislators of the Art Nouveau style. A book illustrator, portrait painter, decorator, theater artist, fashion designer — like friends from the World of Art society, he left a very diverse legacy.

In 1909, Bakst accepted an invitation from Sergei Diaghilev to become a set designer in his Russian Ballets enterprise. In five years, he designed 12 performances, as well as productions for Ida Rubinstein and Anna Pavlova, which were incredibly popular in Europe. «Narcissus», «Scheherazade», «Cleopatra» — the famous French playwright and poet Jean Cocteau wrote an essay about these and other ballets created with the participation of Bakst. 10 essays by Cocteau have been translated into Russian for the first time especially for this book, published for the 150th anniversary of Bakst. The album reflects all areas of the artist’s work.
