Carpal tunnel syndrome: complementary approaches: understanding everything in 2 min

Chiropractic. Evidence of the effectiveness of chiropractic manipulations in treating Carpal tunnel syndrome are still very thin2. A single-blind study with 91 participants demonstrated that chiropractic treatment increased comfort and improved sensation in the fingers, compared to conventional treatment alone (anti-inflammatories and wrist splint at night)3. Cases have been reported where chiropractic has relieved pain4,5.

Vitamini B6. During the 1980s, researchers noticed that vitamin B6 deficiency was more common among people with carpal tunnel syndrome than in the general population.6. However, taking vitamin B6 (or pyridoxine) supplements has led to conflicting results in clinical studies.7-9 .

Arnica. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 37 subjects faʻagaioiga for carpal tunnel syndrome, a combination of oral homeopathic arnica and herbal arnica gel topically provided better pain relief than placebo10. The anti-inflammatory effect of arnica is believed to be attributable to the gel, because in a similar trial which did not include the application of a gel, the homeopathic preparation did not have more effect than the placebo.14.

Peppermint taua suauu (Mentha x piperita). Commission E, the World Health Organization and ESCOP recognize the use of mint essential oil externally to relieve muscle pain, neuralgia or rheumatism.

Rub the painful area with 2 or 3 drops of essential oil, pure or diluted in a little vegetable oil. It is also possible to use creams, oils, ointments or tinctures containing the essential oil. Consult our Peppermint file.

Yoga. Stretching your body regularly (including the hands and wrists) while practicing yoga exercises would help decrease the pain caused by the Carpal tunnel syndrome, improve flexibility and increase wrist strength11, 12. Five minutes of stretching per day would be enough to alleviate the symptoms. A preliminary study led by researcher Maria Garkinkel, also an Iyengar yoga instructor, demonstrated that practicing yoga at the rate of 2 sessions per week (the study lasted 8 weeks) is more effective than using a brace. wrist and no treatment to decrease the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome13.
