Mesh legs: the doctor explained what the “spider veins” signal

And it’s not just “ugly”.

The capillary mesh is considered to be an aesthetic problem, but in some cases it is a sign of a more serious pathology.

Marina Savkina, a leading expert of the CMD Center for Molecular Diagnostics of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, told us about this fairly common problem. Dilated vessels, “spider veins”, “mesh” – in the medical terminology of telangiectasia – can have different shapes (linear, stellate, tree-like) and different colors (red, purple or bluish). The expanded capillary network may be due to genes, i.e. be hereditary, or be a symptom of various diseases.

Dangerous problem

Often telangiectasias occur due to sudden changes in temperature, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, bad habits, intense physical exertion or a sedentary lifestyle. If the problem occurs while taking combined oral contraceptives, then recovery often occurs about 6 months after childbirth or discontinuation of the drug. In these cases, as a rule, no medical intervention is required. But the expansion of capillaries is not always an aesthetic problem; it can be caused by malfunctions in the work of internal organs. Only a specialist can determine this.

Treatment of telangiectasia is not limited to achieving a cosmetic effect; at the same time, it is important to eliminate the underlying disease. Otherwise, the mesh will appear again, and the disease will progress.

The doctor will prescribe a comprehensive examination, it may include blood tests and instrumental studies to assess the condition of the vessels. Today, laser, sclerotherapy, and intense pulsed light are used to solve problems with skin vessels. The choice of the method of treatment depends on the severity and location of defects, on concomitant diseases.
