Sometimes you can see such a picture. A beginner spinning player, especially if he is not particularly constrained by funds, buys a huge amount of cutting-edge lures. And leaving for the reservoir, he does not know what to do with all this arsenal. Therefore, catching pike on a spinning rod does not go the way I painted it in my fantasies. And if a novice angler is still limited by a certain budget, the question arises before him – which of the lures for pike fishing he needs to buy and what not, because you can’t keep up with all the new products.
Experienced anglers, as a rule, develop a certain strategy over the years. Suppose, in such and such conditions, the angler catches on silicone, in such and such – on a turntable, and so on. Some anglers collect huge collections of lures, while others, on the contrary, manage with two or three models of lures, and catch no less than “collectors”.
Artificial lures for pike fishing
It is both simple and difficult to write about the choice of lures for pike fishing. Simple – over the years, certain sets have been formed for catching this predatory fish in various conditions. It is difficult – even in the same place day after day is not necessary, and at some point the pike refuses what it confidently grabbed before. It helps that we go fishing together or three together, and start catching on different baits. One is “behaved” on Bass Assassin and almost everywhere starts fishing with this “killer”, the other first of all installs a Sandra twister or a Scouter wobbler.
I myself, if, of course, conditions allow, I start fishing with wobblers. Moreover, from those that, even without additional tricks in wiring (except perhaps for a few short pauses / accelerations), they themselves “start” the pike. At a depth of up to two meters – this is Excalibur Shallow Runner, Yo-Zuri SS Minnow, floating Rat-L-Trap, Duel Drum, Mirrolure popper-component, compositions from Bomber, Rebel, Mirroluure, Bomber Flat 2A, Daiwa Scouter. At depths of 2 – 4 meters – rattlin XPS, Daim, Manniak, wobblers of the Hardcore series and the US professional series Bassmaster and Orion, Poltergeist and Scorcerer Halco, Frenzy Berkley. If the pike refuses wobblers (not only from the above, but also from others), but takes silicone, I switch to it. These are twisters Sandra, Action Plastic, Relax, and vibrotails Shimmy Shad Berkley, Kopyto, Clon Relax, Flipper Mann’s. And, of course, the “magic wand” – “panicles” XPS and Spro.
What lures to start fishing in an unfamiliar place
I catch pikes on spinning in an unfamiliar place, it is not reasonable to start with wobblers. Firstly, a wobbler can be planted in snags, and it’s good if it is a model that is on sale – you either can’t find some in stores, or they are just starting to appear. The second reason why it is undesirable to start with wobblers in an unfamiliar place is ignorance of the depth and topography of the bottom: you can miss a pike standing in a ditch or over a hillock.
Therefore, in such cases, silicone and home-made oscillators are the first to go, fortunately, “Storleks”, “Atoms” and “Urals” once one of my fishing teachers cast a sufficient amount. And already with skill, if necessary, wobblers, branded vibrations from Kuusamo, Eppinger, Luhr Jensen or “panicles” are launched. We have to abandon the wobblers and with a strong head or side wind. In this case, silicone, oscillators (in particular, Kastmaster), turntables “Master” and, again, “panicles” are used.
Often you have to change the bait with a weak bite, although in this case you can simply leave the “panicle” and not engage in experiments. But the “panicles” have to be protected, they are not so easy to get.
Catching pike on a spinning rod from my practice
Once in late autumn, having caught a couple of good pikes, we decided not to go home (usually by 10 in the morning we are already sitting on the shore and existing boats): silence, sunshine, complete calm on the water, not a cloud in the sky, no need to work among the machines dangle – yes, well … Let’s go fishing – sunbathe! They tapped the entire edge of the ditch, the ditch itself with Relax twisters – in the morning their pike grabbed it in the throat, now zero. As, however, and always – we fish in this place only in the morning and in the evening. Above the mound, it seems to be like a bite, or a white fish was hurt. We decide that the first, we anchor. A friend launches a grayish “killer”, I still have a yellow-red twister. As usual, ten casts. We put Sandra twisters fluorescent green and mother-of-pearl with red – on the sixth cast on fluo – a clear bite. We sip water for ten minutes without any count. We put the greenish “killer” and Kopyto – one at a time in 15 minutes. “Panicle” has long been left with only one, and hooks are rare, but they do happen. Therefore, we stop at the “killer” and Kopyto, deciding to vary the colors. Finally, for the red “killer” – a pike for one and a half kilograms, a gathering, for another one and a half. I have only “Clon” from red. I put it – pike, explicit three kilograms. In two hours, they “persuaded” four more. They take only red and golden, other colors do not work, which is contrary to all the rules – the water is clear, and the sun, and there are no waves, and casts are “from the sun.”
Due to being busy at work, we fish mainly on weekends. Hence the types of fish and, as professionals like to say, strategy and tactics: pike, pike perch, perch (if over 400 grams), asp (if there is a chance to catch over 1,5 kilograms) in any places where there are few people. Even if the fish will stand as a wall, but there will be a lot of people, we will not climb into this crowd. A particular passion is racing for pike in late autumn in shallow bays – the algae have settled, but the pike has not yet rolled into the pits. Sometimes pikes arrange a fight worse than asp and rush to the unhooked several pieces from different sides. And not some “pencils”, but two to five kilograms.
Despite the unprecedented mythical growth of real wages, this very real one is barely enough to support the pants. Therefore, there are no special frills in gear – everything is average both in quality and in price. Reels Daiwa Regal-Z, SS-II, Shimano Twin Power. Rods Silver Creek 7 – 35 r, Daiwa Fantom-X 7 – 28 r, Lamiglas Certified Pro X96MTS 7-18 g. Lines Stren 0,12 mm, Asa mo 0,15 mm, Triline Sensation line 8 lb. There is still a need to purchase a more powerful rod – fifteen minutes to carry a pike for eleven kilos is not enough fun.
