Apple’s March presentation to some extent became significant for the iMac line, even if they did not specifically talk about this computer. Firstly, the desktop Mac Studio was presented there, and secondly, immediately after the presentation, the opportunity to order a 27-inch iMac disappeared from the Apple website – only the 24-inch version on the M1 processor remained. The second fact tells us that before the end of the year the American company can present an updated iMac. In our material, we have collected everything that is currently known about the new iMac 2022.

There is no exact release date for the iMac 2022 in Our Country and around the world yet. Well-known insider and entrepreneur Ross Young believes that iMac 2022 can be shown in the summer at the WWDC 2022 conference¹. However, another analyst Ming Chi Kuo does not agree with him – he is sure that in June of this year, Apple will show only a new 27-inch monitor.², and not a whole monoblock. 

In any case, the imminent start of sales is that it is now virtually impossible to buy a new (meaning not restored to “like new” condition) 27-inch iMac. 

Worldwide sales will begin within 14 days after the official announcement of the new iMac. Due to Apple’s sanctions restrictions in Our Country, it will be possible to buy an iMac from “gray” suppliers – about a month after the official release.

The specific price of the iMac 2022 has not yet been announced, but Western sources suggest that the basic version will cost at least $2000³. As the specifications of a specific iMac 2022 model improve, this number will increase. If we talk about Our Country, then here it is worth considering an additional “premium” for resellers of equipment who will import equipment bypassing Apple’s restrictions.

The 27-inch iMac has always been more solid than its 24-inch counterpart. In this model, Apple engineers installed more powerful hardware, an anti-glare screen and did not experiment with body colors. Most likely, the same trend will continue in 2022.

In December 2021, it was reported that the display of the new iMac will not work with mini-LED technology as in the MacBook and iPad⁴. However, it is reported that the display will be 40% brighter due to the increase in the number of LEDs. Previously, there was information that the all-in-one will support mini-LED, XDR and ProMotion with a floating screen refresh rate⁵.

It is likely that both insiders who received the information are right. Nobody forbids Apple to use a more advanced display in the 27-inch iMac Pro model.

Also, not everything remains clear with the display size itself. Right now, Apple is selling a 27-inch Studio Display and a 32-inch ProDisplay XDR. According to various insiders, the diagonal of the new iMac 2022 can either remain at 27 inches or increase.

Despite the overall strict monoblock design, iMac 2022 can get different body colors. It is not known whether the set of shades will be identical to the entry-level 24-inch model or if it will be less vibrant. It is likely that the computer will have a slightly reduced display bezels, as is often the case with Apple device updates.⁶. 

By the way, when using the new body colors, Apple will also have to change the shade of the display frame – in the previous model it was jet black, which will not be combined with bright colors.

It’s too early to talk about photos of the iMac 2022 – the pictures have not even appeared in the Apple fan communities.

The 2021 iMac models have a Magic Keyboard with built-in Touch ID, and the same control will most likely appear on the 27 2022-inch all-in-one iMac.

However, for several years now there have been rumors that the FaceID system or its equivalent will finally appear in the iMac and Macbook lines – evidence of this was found in the depths of the MacOS system.⁷. Due to the size of the case, it will be easier to use it in a candy bar, so it is possible that face unlock will be available in the new iMac 2022⁸. In this case, Touch ID in the bundled Magic Keyboard is not worth the wait.

In all other respects, the standard Apple full-size Magic Keyboard is expected to be bundled with the iMac 2022.

The 27-inch iMac 2020 had enough ports to connect all your devices. Insider dylandkt reports that in 2022 a card reader will be added to the already complete set.⁹. Thus, it will become a little easier for photographers to work on the iMac 2022.

The source also reports that a full-fledged HDMI port will appear in the monoblock. Apparently in order to transfer the image from the iMac 2022 to an even larger display without the use of adapters. 

The ethernet port familiar to all desktop PCs will not disappear anywhere. Data on the number of Thunderbolt and USB interfaces in the new monoblock is not yet available. Probably, everything will remain at the level of the iMac 2020 or the top models of the monoblock in 2021.

In 2022, the final transition of all Apple computers to their own M-series processors is expected, and the iMac will be the last device.¹⁰. They do this so that software developers do not need to optimize programs for individual processors released by third-party manufacturers.

The previously mentioned insider dylandkt shared the main technical characteristics of the future computer. He believes that the new iMac 2022 will receive two versions of the M1 processor – Pro and Max, as it was in the current line of Macbook Pro laptops. The M1 Pro and M1 Max are quite powerful systems with a 10-core main processor and an integrated 16 or 32-core video adapter. In the case of a desktop all-in-one, Apple doesn’t need to conserve battery power, so the M1 Pro and M1 Max aren’t limited in performance.

The amount of RAM in the base iMac 2022 will grow from 8 to 16 GB. In more advanced monoblock models, it can be increased, it is not yet known How long (in the previous version of the computer – up to 128 GB of LPDDR4 memory.

The base volume of the SSD drive should be increased to 512 GB, but this is frankly not enough in modern realities. The powerful 27-inch iMac 2022 is a tool for work, and often with “heavy” photos and videos. Therefore, buying versions in which less than 1 TB of internal memory is a controversial decision.

Apparently, iMac 2022 will not be an Apple revelation. The American company is completing the expected transition to its own processors, and is in no hurry to use the not yet officially announced M2 in popular devices. 

In some technical aspects of the iMac 2022, many questions remain. For example, the diagonal of the screen and the presence of FaceID are unknown. These updates to the mass public will be much more interesting than the planned upgrades of the processor and the amount of RAM. However, new colors can visually update the monoblock, even if they are restrained.
