Of course, there are also dolphins, for example – they seem to be smart too, but when was the last time you walked with them or asked them to bring slippers? That’s it. And the dogs – here they are, just whistle. However, not all of them are equally smart. According to scientists, dogs of herding and hunting breeds have a biological tendency to heightened intelligence, since they were created by nature just to perform more complex tasks.

However, wait to argue and say: “But my Sharik is worse than all of you …” Dog intelligence is really not 100 percent predetermined by the breed – and an ordinary mongrel theoretically may turn out to be more intelligent than a purebred dog. How do you determine this? The criteria are simple: you need to compare how easy the dog can learn, how well he understands people and performs various tasks.

Representatives of 20 breeds, which we have chosen for this publication, have repeatedly passed all kinds of tests and performed difficult tasks, and therefore are considered one of the smartest.

Scottish setter

Dogs of this breed in England and Scotland are called “Gordon Setter” – after one of the local dukes. The breed was bred back in the 1977th century specifically for hunting, however, these dogs are famous not only for their hunting skills, but also for their excellent memory, endurance and ingenuity. By the way, the Soviet film “White Bim, Black Ear” in XNUMX tells the story of a Scottish setter of an unusual color, although an English setter was filmed as an albino setter.

Uelese terrier

Despite the external resemblance to the Airedale Terrier (a dog of this breed starred in the film “The Adventures of Electronics”), these two breeds have no common roots. They are distinguished by loyalty, but at the same time willfulness and cockiness, however, with proper (very persistent) training, they become obedient to their owners. They belong to burrowing hunting dogs, and in order to take an animal on its territory, you need to have not only intelligence, but also courage and independence.

Old English Sheepdogs are a herding dog breed, friendly, but can become sad if they are often left alone. Be prepared that the shepherd’s genes may appear unexpectedly – during a trip to the nature with a large family company, such a dog can regard all your household as his sheep and begin to drive the idly walking into one heap. The breed appeared in 1888, but the first such dogs arrived in our country only in the 1970s.

English springer spaniel

The oldest of all English hunting breeds – all other English Spaniel breeds were derived from it. They are very good for tracking game and carrying game to the hunter, but also excellent companions – dogs of this breed are ideal for hiking and out-of-town outdoor activities.

A very vigilant breed, the intellect of which is by nature sharpened to keep an eye on livestock, therefore they will be ideal for those who have their own farm. Shepherd breed originally from the Swiss canton of Bern. Differs in fearlessness and at the same time good nature, devotion to the owner and lack of aggression towards strangers. They give in easily to training, however, they do not like drastic changes in training methods.

Initially, it was a hound breed, but in the end it gained fame as a service dog (with their help they searched for criminals) and a guard dog. And all because of the extremely developed scent – if a dog of this breed senses its prey, then, as a rule, it will not miss its own.

Papillon

The breed was born, according to most researchers, in France, although Spain, Italy and Belgium also claim its homeland. Papillons are distinguished by their intelligence, very easy to learn. True, there is one caveat – dogs of this breed need constant attention, with a lack of it, they can become irritable and even aggressive.

Dogs of this breed, although they belong to the decorative group, are also good at sports, since they are easy to train. Initially, the poodle was a working dog and was used for hunting, and genes still make themselves felt, some representatives of this breed have not lost their hunting skills.

Surprisingly, but true: the original purpose of this breed of dogs was to graze sheep, and not serve in the police. However, in the end, it turned out that the German shepherds achieved their fame precisely because of their work in various law enforcement agencies. However, as a domestic dog, they are also common – largely due to the fact that they are famous for their intelligence.

Doberman

Some of the best defenders, but not only. In Stanley Coren’s book The Intelligence of Dogs, Dobermans are included in the group of breeds with the best training ability, which, of course, speaks of intelligence. True, if they are not properly educated, then they can get out of hand and begin to educate their masters.

Rottweiler

A classic breed of service dogs that can be seen on patrolling the streets with policemen or as a guide for a blind person. But their character is not easy, there is even a saying from German breeders: “If you trained a German shepherd, you did nothing, and if a Rottweiler, then a lot.”

Also, dogs of this breed are known as the Aussie or Australian Shepherd Dog, however, their homeland is not Australia at all, but the United States. Hardworking, friendly and funny, good for families with children and an active lifestyle.

Initially, the breed was bred as a hunting dog, but now these dogs are also used as guide dogs, rescue dogs, and because of their keen sense of smell they are used to search for drugs. They are distinguished by good character, they love water very much, and are also excellent companions.

Despite the short legs and non-impressive height of 30 cm, its genealogy dates back to the XNUMXth century. There is a version that the name corgi got from the Welsh words cor and gi (“dwarf” and “dog”). Corgis are cheerful, agile and playful, they easily get along with cats, while this is one of the most easily trained breeds – memorizing a command from the second or third time is not uncommon for them, but the norm.
