A dye that the world of medicine does not spare praise – astaxanthin. All thanks to the fact that this natural ingredient has been found to be 1000 times more powerful than vitamin C, and at the same time the most powerful antioxidant that has been discovered so far.

Also compared to beta-carotene and vitamin E, it is much more effective in inhibiting skin aging. Astaxanthin has been known since 1938, and is currently being tested in US, Japanese, Swedish and Norwegian laboratories.

Where does astaxanthin come from?

Included among the carotenoids, referred to as the “red miracle”, astaxanthin gives the world of fauna and flora a red color. Its distinctive color is due to flamingos, lobsters, crabs, salmon and wild berries. As a xanthophyll, astaxanthin has two hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, which makes it more effective than other carotenoids. It interacts with lycopene as well as with beta-carotene. It perfectly penetrates the cell membrane, its action in liposomes can be compared to a bridge. By transporting an electron between the carotenoid and the center of the liposome, where free radicals accumulate, it has an antioxidant effect. Due to the fact that it does not react with free radicals, the body’s cells remain untouched by the cationic radical form created with beta-carotene.

Where can we find astaxanthin?

  • It is often contained in rejuvenating preparations and lipsticks, thanks to which it improves the color, tightens the skin, restores its youth and smoothness. It reduces puffiness around the eyes, and the facial skin is perfectly moisturized and rested.
  • Cosmetics that protect the skin against the harmful effects of UV rays, which can accelerate skin photoaging. It fights erythema, lipid oxidation and stimulates mechanisms that protect us against burns or spots on the skin.
  • Astaxanthin is also included in cosmetics for the care or make-up of oily and combination skin, it covers imperfections.

The versatility of astaxanthin

This substance not only takes care of our appearance, but also protects the heart, adrenal cortex, pituitary gland and thymus gland. It strengthens the immune system, and also reduces the likelihood of stroke, heart attack and cancer. It improves processes in the body, has anti-inflammatory properties. Astaxanthin easily dissolves in fats, efficiently penetrates into the stratum corneum, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Stimulates the regeneration of the epidermis, metabolism along with cell division and collagen synthesis, facilitates the skin’s regulatory activities. It prevents skin dehydration or skin imbalance. Reduces singlet oxygen, is responsible for retinoic acid, maximizes optical density.
